Abstract
For most of our field's existence, the focus has been solidly on algorithms and models, with data treated mostly as an afterthought. Only recently did computer vision start to appreciate the singularly crucial role that data plays. In this lecture, I will begin by tracing the history of data and its rising importance in computer vision as well as in human visual perception. I will then discuss self-supervised learning as a way to capture the enormous power of data without having to resort to human labels.
