About

The Image Processing Laboratory (IPLAB – http://iplab.dmi.unict.it) is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Catania, Italy. IPLAB’s research focuses in the areas of Image Processing, Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Computer Graphics.

IPLAB research group involves 16 people: 2 Full Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor, 2 Post DOC, 10 Ph.D. Students. The research group has strong collaboration with industries leader in the field of expertise of the Image Processing Laboratory. Different industries collaborating with IPLAB (e.g., STMicroelectronics, OSRAM, TIM-Telecom, Park Smart, Centro Studi, Xenia, OrangeDev, ENEL, ECLAT ecc.) have already granted Ph.D. Scholarships to members of IPLAB to support their research.

The main scientific activities of IPLAB are related to: Image and Video Understanding, and Enhancement, First Person (Egocentric) Vision, Medical Imaging, Archeomatica and Cultural Heritage, Multimedia Forensics, Assistive Technologies.

The faculty members of IPLAB serve as lecturers at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for a number of Undergraduate Courses of the “Corso di Laurea in Informatica” and “Corso di Laurea in Matematica”: Computer Graphics, Interazione e Multimedia, Multimedia, Fondamenti di Analisi dei Dati, Social Media Management, Computer Vision, Digital Forensics, Machine Learning e Sviluppo di Giochi Digitali.

The IPLAB research group has published more than 350 research works (in books, book chapters, National and International Conferences, National and International Journals) and more than 25 patents (in collaboration with industrial partners).

IPLAB has been involved in different research projects with both national and international funding (ENIAC Programme EU, EU COST Action, PO/FESR Sicilia, PIA Innovazione, Fondo FAR). Moreover, IPLAB is currently involved in collaborations with industry leaders such as OSRAM, TIM-Telecom, ST-Microelectronics.

Since 2007, the faculty members of the IPLAB group are part of the Public-Private Joint Research Laboratory between STMicroelectronics and the University of Catania, Italy. In 2016 the university spinoff iCTLab (www.ictlab.srl) is founded. iCTLab offers consulting services in the field of Digital Forensics, with a specific focus in the treatment, acquisition and analysis of multimedia data.

IPLAB has organized different international scientific events such as ICVSS (since 2007) International Computer Vision Summer School (www.dmi.unict.it/icvss), MISS (since 2014) Medical Imaging Summer School (http://iplab.dmi.unict.it/miss/), the scientific conferences EG-IT 2006, IWCV 2012, ACIVS 2016 and ICIAP 2017.

Le principali attività scientifiche riguardano: Image and Video Understanding, and Enhancement, First Person (Egocentric) Vision, Imaging Medicale, Archeomatica e Cultural Heritage, Multimedia Forensics, Assistive Technologies.
